Can you imagine any other hero in place of Mahesh Babu in "Pokiri"? A firm no will come for the answer. No one can be imagined in the place of Mahesh Babu. That is the impression Mahesh Babu left on the audience and also the movie is Mahesh's best in his film career so far. Salman Khan could not be accepted by Telugu audience in "Wanted" the Hindi remake of "Pokiri".
After seeing "Pokiri" the above feelings are formed by the audience all right but what if the movie were made with some other artists? Would they have given the same impression? We can’t say. They may and again they may not!
Puri Jagannadh originally wanted to cast Ravi Teja and Parvati Melton in place of Mahesh Babu and Iliana. And the title thought of was "Uttam Singh S/o Suryanaryana". The role of Suryanarayana was played by Nasar in "Pokiri".
If you imagine Ravi Teja and Parvati Melton in the "Pokiri" lead roles, they may not look the same way but they might have done equally well in the movie under the direction of Puri Jagannadh. Puri knows what to extract and to what extent from the actors to match the imaginary roles that play in his mind. A director sees the movie first in his mind and then it is captured though the camera lens to make us able to see what he saw in his mind. That is why a director is called "Darsakudu" in Telugu that means a Drastha (seer), a person who can see ahead of all others.
Yes. Mahesh could have been replaced by Puri Jagannadh in Pokiri.
